My name is Kydon Larrabee, and I am a thirteen-year-old waterman.
I was born in the water. Literally. (my mom gave birth to me in a small pool) I learned to swim before I learned to walk. Since birth, I have loved all water related activities. I got on my first surfboard just before my third birthday in the summer of 2013 and sailed my first sailboat the summer before I turned 5 years old in 2014. My older brother and best friend, Wynter, has always been my ambassador and paved the way for me to get opportunities earlier than most kids. Thanks to Wynter’s enrolment in
aviation camp, I was also accepted as the youngest member into the camp and flew my first plane when I was only 6. Similarly, I earned my open water SCUBA certification and foiled for the first time when I was only 10. I first learned to surf on Nantucket island Massachusetts. It was through the same surf school where I learned to surf that I was introduced to an older junior surfer and waterman who became my first coach and mentor. He was the first person to take me under their wing and essentially open my eyes to the possibilities of the surfing world. Prior to meeting and being coached, I didn’t know about surfing competitions. He suggested that we go to Florida and surf year-round. Thanks to his advice and guidance and my parents support, I participated in my first surfing contest at 10 years old. Since the pandemic, my family has settled into a routine of enjoying summers in Massachusetts and winters in Flagler Beach, FL. While in Florida my brother, Wynter and I began competitive surfing in the winter of 2022. My brother and I have surfed both longboard and shortboard competitively just about every weekend for a little over the last year. My brother and I always surf together, have always surfed together and are best friends. We share all the same passion and love for the water. After about two months of competitive surfing, in March 2022 we qualified for our first east coast NSSA regionals in both longboard and shortboard. We attended our first NSSA national competition in Huntington Beach in June of 2022.
In September 2022 we were invited to compete in the USA Prime East series. Right after we received our Prime East invitations, we were invited to participate in our first Rising Tides event in Malibu for the WSL Longboard World Championships. In June 2023 we completed our first USA Prime season. I finished in the top 10 for shortboard and qualified for Prime Nationals at Lower Testles in June 2023. I also qualified for the USA longboard Nationals in Oceanside, re-qualified for NSSA Nationals and the ESA Easterns in September 2023.
At Prime Longboard Nationals in Oceanside I finished 3 rd in the U14 Division and rounded out the top 10 spot in the U18 Division. At Prime Shortboard Nationals at Lowers I advanced through rounds one finishing the season at an equal 25 th .
At NSSA Nationals I placed 2 nd in the Open Longboard Division, 3 rd in the Explorer Longboard Division and an equal 25 th in the Menehune Shortboard Division. At ESA Eastern Championships I won the U14 Menehune Longboard Division, placed 2 nd in the U14 Shortboard Division and finished an equal 9 th in the U18 Junior Men’s Longboard Division. I have my eyes set on competing in the WSL CT in both longboard and shortboard and being a world champion in both. The purpose in telling you about all our passions and interests and activities beyond surfing is to illustrate that we are not your typical
surfer. We are waterman. We set goals and achieve them. We intend to be in and on the water for the rest of our lives.
I longboard, I shortboard, I foil, I swim, I sail, I fish, I dive. I do and love all things in and on the ocean.
I am beyond excited to have been invited to participate in the highly esteemed USA Surfing Prime East Series! For the second consecutive season, I will be competing in the Boys U14 division. It's such an incredible honor to have the opportunity to showcase my skills alongside the very best junior surfers in the country.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the amazing team of organizers, coaches, and expert judges who have worked tirelessly to make this series a reality for young surfers like myself. Their dedication to the sport is truly inspiring.
I also want to take a moment to thank my family, friends, coaches, surf shops, and supporters who have been by my side throughout my surfing journey. Your unwavering belief in my abilities and continuous encouragement have played a crucial role in my success. I am forever grateful for the love and support I receive from all of you.
As I gear up for this upcoming season, I am fully committed to representing myself, my community, my family, and the sport of surfing with the utmost integrity and sportsmanship. I promise to give my absolute best in every competition, aiming to make each and every one of you proud.
I cannot wait to share my experiences and progress with all of you! Yeeewww! 🤙
